London (ANI): Actor Sir Ian McKellen has sundry a graeco-Roman Shakespeare sonnet with electronic music and rapping. He recorded an impromptu recital of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 that begins with the words "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" during a visit to City Gateway, a youth centre in Limehouse, East London.

The speech was later on mixed with electronic music and rapping, recorded by some of the younker centre's members. Sir Ian said that the blend of two art forms separated by 400 days came naturally. "Shakespeare is all based on beatniks, rhythm and rhyme all things that rappers deal with," the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Young guys try to read society's road map for behavior

It's a rough route to manhood for pres Young guys, world Health Organization more than ever are finding themselves confounded and conflicted about what "masculinity" means.

Behavioral researchers say being a heterosexual male used to mean being macho, but guys today get mixed messages on all fronts as they navigate sex, drinking, friendships and the future.

"The social messages about how to be a skillful person or a good guy vary quite widely," says Glenn Good, professor of direction psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Joseph Hammer, 23, who is working on a master's in counseling at Missouri, hears a lot of competing messages. "Your parents tell you things. Your friends say you things. Your teachers tell you things. You see things on TV."

How to deal with women?

"Guys know they're supposed to treat women as equals," says Andrew Smiler, an assistant professor of psychology at the State University of New York-Oswego. "But we haven't changed maleness and we haven't taught boys and men how to deal with these women.

"We still tell boys and men they should be in charge and bear the knickers," he adds. "Those are two messages you want person who is your equalise, and you should still be in charge."

In his 2007 book Boys Adrift, family dr. Leonard Sax of Malvern, Pa., suggests that many young work force are becoming slackers, in part because of to a fault many hours of video games and a dearth of role models that undermine male motivation.

In the past tense, images of manhood glorified drinking and womanizing, researchers say, simply today, they note, in that respect seems to be equal pressure to be sensitive.

"A big proportion of young males view drinking and having sexual conquests as the appropriate way to begin to show they are an adult male," Good says. "Their male peers are saying 'Be tough' and girls are locution 'Tell me about your feelings."

Guys pal round and do "guy" things, like play video games, talk sports, watch porn, binge-drink and hook up, which sociologist and gender studies skillful Michael Kimmel of Stony Brook University-New York discusses in his new volume Guyland. It's based on surveys of 13,000 students at 17 colleges about sexual "hooking up." And he interviewed cd young workforce, most in their 20s.

"The middle class white idea of proving masculinity becomes the dominant form on campuses today. It's more intense and pervasive than ever earlier," he says.

Kimmel, 57, says there has always been "guy culture," but what's acceptable has changed.

"My generation's 'dating etiquette' is now called sexual assault," he says. "What we victimised to think was distinctive office behavior is at present sexual torment."

Kimmel says these hard-partying behaviors ar "almost universal" from ages 16 to 26 and are well-nigh prevalent on campuses, peculiarly at bombastic public universities. But they are besides evident among both minorities on campus and working-class males.

In their early 20s, "around relationships and around careers, women seem more focussed and task-oriented and have a better-defined life plan than the men do," Kimmel says. He worries that "that leads manpower to search more irresponsible or slackerly."

That's non true, he adds: "They just haven't figured extinct what they have to do to get on track."

Getting back on running

Kenny Gillis, a 2005 mechanical engine room graduate from the University of Colorado-Boulder, is finish a erolia minutilla in Williamstown, Mass., with a troupe that leads bicycle tours for teens.

His concluding semester of college, he interviewed with several engine room firms and accepted a job.

That spring, "I called them back and said 'I can't do this right now,' " he says. "I wasn't ready to go into the workforce."

But turning 25 last month made him settle to nidus more on his long-term goals, he says.

Peers play a critical use in validating gender personal identity for young men exploring their masculinity, experts tell. And even as this generation has more mixed-gender friendships, guy bonding, largely through shared activities, is important, says Geoffrey Greif, a University of Maryland professor world Health Organization interviewed 400 men of all ages for Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships.

Late teens and 20s is one of "two peak times" in life when friends toy a key role, he adds.

Greg Glasser, 19, of Columbus, Ohio, says he and his friends are into outdoor activities, from basketball to hike and swimming.

In the fall, football is "huge," says Glasser, a sophomore at Ohio University in Athens.

"Saturdays and Sundays are just football days," he says. "Guys gather around and throw a football in the yard during the clarence Day and go to the game and party."

So, if all this exposure to "guy culture" isn't salubrious, as some suggest, what's a guy wire to do?

Kimmel says staying affiliated with parents and determination at least one close guy friend will help.

Some manage to stay on track, including 22-year-old Layne Held, a credit analyst at a bank in Birmingham, Ala. He gradational in May with a business grade from the University of Georgia in Athens, where "people went to social class and treasured to do well.

"I knew going into college I wanted to have play and meet people, merely I realised I was going thither to catch an education. I had to get my studies done."

READERS: How do you define masculinity? How's it different to be a young guy today? If you're a parent, what messages ar you trying to transport your boy about "guy culture?"

Hunger first course for Cannes sidebar

Tells story of IRA activist Bobby Sands

CANNES -- This year's Un Certain Regard sidebar is set to get off to a visceral and controversial start with the unspooling of Steve McQueen's "Hunger," giving festivalgoers an early punch in the guts.

The no-holds-barred movie details the story of Bobby Sands, an Irish Republican Army activist who was voted onto the U.K. Parliament whilst on hunger strike in prison for the possession of firearms in 1981. He subsequently starved himself to death.

It is bound to court controversy and will likely attract a large amount of coverage from the international press, and is already attracting buzz among industryites because it marks the big-screen debut for Turner Prize-winning artist McQueen.

Film 4, the movie arm of U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, developed and majority-funded McQueen's movie and will be hoping it scoops the Camera d'Or for the debut director.

"As a piece of cinema it is very different and so far it appears to be extremely powerful for people as a cinematic experience," producer Laura Hastings-Smith said. "I think a lot of thought has gone into this project and it is an interpretation of what went on. But I think we all feel (as filmmakers) that it is a film we can speak up for and stand behind."

She said producing the movie with a first-time helmer more accustomed to winning prizes for his paintings than wielding a film camera was a refreshing change.

"It was a learning curve, but Steve was very upfront about that. He sat down with the actors and said 'I've never done this before' and it was incredibly disarming. As Steve says, 'If you are honest with people, then they will help and make things better,' " Hastings-Smith said.

Other high points in the eclectic sidebar are likely to come from veteran Raymond Depardon's documentary "La Vie Moderne" (The Modern Life), which portrays peasant farming life in contemporary France, and James Toback's documentary about the notorious bad boy of boxing "Tyson," featuring extensive archival fight footage and interview with Iron Mike.

Thomas Clay's Bangkok-set "Soi Cowboy" -- about a fat, white Viagra-popping man embroiled in a sexual relationship with a young Thai prostitute looking for a way out of the red light district -- will likely set chins wagging, while Andreas Dresen's sex-after-60 drama "Wolke 9" (Cloud 9) could provide industry pillow talk.

Also attracting anticipatory buzz is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's slice of Japanese family life "Tokyo Sonata," about a family full of secrets, and Amat Escalante's "Los Bastardos," which details the story of two young illegal Mexican workers in an unnamed U.S. city who are hired by a man to murder his wife.

Ike Turner is sure nonpareil of the virtually dehumanized figures in rock history. Mention his name and the first association that comes to well-nigh anyone's mind is "abusive husband," not "soulfulness asterisk" or "rock & turn over initiate." According to legend, Turner was a tyrannous ogre world Health Organization used physical violence and psychological intimidation to control his infinitely more gifted wife Tina, while humoring his have appetites for cocain and women at every turn. That's not entirely accurate, although by well-nigh accounts Turner did quite an a moment to earn that report; he exhausted time in prison house due to his dose problems, and his possess refutations of Tina's allegations of abuse feature been discrepant at best over the eld. Still, this view of Turner as villain does a ill service to his very real musical bequest as an musician and bandleader. As a pianist in the early '50s, Turner helped repose the base for rock & stray; he was too a distinctive guitar player with a biting, awful quality, and was one of the number one to make the whammy browning automatic rifle an integral parting of his sound. It's unfeigned that he was nowhere near the isaac Bashevis Singer Tina was, and it's in all likelihood besides true that she was his just the ticket to stardom; furthermore, his songwriting, patch sometimes divine, oftentimes demoniacal a generic quality that made consistent chart appearances difficult. But as a bandleader, his disciplinarian approach -- when it wasn't manifesting itself in darker fashion, that is -- resulted in undeniably rigorous, well-drilled ensembles and some of the virtually stimulating live shows the R&B worldly concern of all time saw -- centered about Tina, yes, simply eyeglasses yet. If Turner isn't exactly the virtually defendable character around, in the end his musical strengths and weaknesses deserve the same objective estimate as anyone.

Izear Luster Turner, Jr. was natural November 5, 1931, in Clarksdale, MS, the centre of the segregated South. His father was beaten to death by a ring of angry whites, and ontogeny up in a hostile environment unquestionably case-hardened Turner. He found his vocation in music from an early years; he erudite boogie-woogie forte-piano firsthand from his divine guidance, Pinetop Perkins, and as a stripling talked himself into a DJ slot on the local radio post, where he played everything from the parachute megrims of Louis Jordan to rural area & western. He formed his kickoff band spell still in high shoal, and by the late '40s had assembled an outfit dubbed the Kings of Rhythm. In 1951, the Kings of Rhythm travelled to Memphis to record at Sam Phillips' Sun studio. Their original tune "Rocket 88" (actual authorship is static disputed) was recorded with a pb vocal by sax musician Jackie Brenston, and as a answer was released under the diagnose Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, non Ike Turner & His Kings of Rhythm. "Skyrocket 88" zoomed to the crest of the R&B charts and is today regarded by many critics as organism quite possibly the first true rock & roll criminal record. Brenston afterward bypast for an abortive solo career, spell Turner and his ring became session regulars about Memphis; they went on to back legendary bluesmen wish Howlin' Wolf ("How Many More Years"), Elmore James, Otis Rush ("Double Trouble," "All Your Love"), Robert Nighthawk, Buddy Guy, and Sonny Boy Williamson II, summation an salmagundi of Sun artists. During the early '50s, Turner switched from pianissimo to guitar, and as well twofold as a talent scout for the Bihari Brothers' Los Angeles-based Modern Records, where he helped get other breaks for artists wish Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King.

During the mid-'50s, Turner affected the Kings of Rhythm to East St. Louis, where they pink wine to the crest of the local R&B circuit; Brenston rejoined in 1955, and the group too continued its academic session activeness. Turner sometimes issued records under his own diagnose on labels like Flair, RPM, and Federal, too victimisation the aliases Icky Renrut and Lover Boy. Adopting a review initialise for their live performances, the Kings of Rhythm worked with a revolving group of vocalists during this period. One was a teen singer originally from Tennessee named Anna Mae Bullock, wHO met Turner in 1956. She coupled the revue, and stirred into Turner's firm afterwards becoming fraught by the band's sax player; shortly, she and Turner began their own relationship and had a child of their have, marrying in 1958.

Renamed Tina, Turner's new (and up-to-the-minute) wife got her low gear probability to babble jumper lead on a recording in late 1959, carving "A Fool in Love" for the Sue label. Released the next yr, the song was a runaway smash on the R&B charts, peaking at figure iI. Turner completed he'd observed a voltage prisonbreak hotshot, and reshaped the stria into the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, with Tina instantly the centerpiece of the act. It took a little time for all tangled to get their bearings, simply in the meantime, the hits unbroken approaching; "I Idolize You," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "Poor Fool," and "Tra La La La La" all hit the R&B Top Ten, a string that ran through 1962. (All take out "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" were scripted by Turner.) 1962 besides proverb the spillage of Dance With Ike & Tina Turner & Their Kings of Rhythm Band, an all-instrumental album that showcased Turner's irregular guitar run at its charles Herbert Best. As Ike & Tina became one of the hardest-working, most popular acts on the supposed chitlin circumference, they recorded for a telephone number of independent labels over the next few age; notwithstanding, since Turner's original material was progressively standard-issue, their chart fortunes declined reasonably.

At the like clip, the temptations of fame were proving as well much for Turner; he developed a terrible habituation to cocain that, when interracial with his dominant personality and warm temper, made for a volatile combination. According to Tina's autobiography, Turner grew progressively red, trouncing her oft and even burning her with cigarettes and java if she got kayoed of line. Turner himself disputes the severity of Tina's claims, merely it's worth noting that he had a widespread report for organism difficult. When producer Phil Spector attempted a commercial comeback around Tina in 1966, he stricken a consider with Turner: in exchange for beingness allowed to record Tina, Ike would receive full credit and billing on the records, merely Ike would besides not be allowed to set ft in the studio or to meddle with the finished recordings. Spector's collaboration with Tina produced the heroic "River Deep - Mountain High," smooth regarded by many as one of rock's superlative singles, and Ike's involvement was nothing -- which, naturally, didn't sit well with him.

In 1969, Ike & Tina were invited to undetermined for the Rolling Stones, and Turner realized that changing times had made the Revue's fierce, smutty firebrand of soulfulness music more toothsome to gabardine rock audiences. Accordingly, Turner incorporated contemporary rock & wrap covers into the Revue's repertory, giving them a whole novel rent on life. Versions of "Fall Together," "I Want to Take You Higher," and "Proud Mary" revived Ike & Tina's graph fortunes -- particularly "Proud Mary," which became their beginning Top Five bolt down single in 1971 and as well won a Grammy. However, Turner's offstage problems were pickings their toll on the act; 1973's "Nutbush City Limits," a song written by Tina, would be their last-place major strike, and Tina walked out on him in the midriff of a 1975 circuit.

The Turners' disassociate was finalized the following year, and Ike never quite a recovered from the red. For a spell, he drop out touring to adjudicate in and run the recording studio, Bolic, he'd open in Los Angeles in 1970. He was to a fault accustomed to life history on the road, though, and formed a new outfit that, naturally, didn't quantity up to his yesteryear succeeder; he as well released a brace of solo records on Red Lightnin'. Turner's cocaine habituation drained nigh of his funds, and his recording studio burnt to the ground in 1982. He ran foul of the law as considerably, and was arrested legion multiplication on for the most part drug-related offenses. When he and Tina were jointly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, he was ineffectual to give ear the observance because he was service of process prison time. When Tina's autobiography was adapted into the 1993 flick What's Love Got to Do With It, Turner signed away all of his rights, allowing the filmmakers to take narrative liberties for dramatic outcome if they chose. Turner attempted a comeback afterward being released from prison; he as well remarried and eventually overcame his addictions to unrecorded a clean, sober life. At first he well-tried to keep up with the times musically, but afterward touring with Joe Louis Walker as a piano player and guitar player, he realised thither was more demand for his original style, and formed a new version of the Kings of Rhythm. His autobiography, Takin' Back My Name, was published by a U.K. troupe in 1999, and in 2001 he released a new record album, Here and Now, which was nominative for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues Album category; it was besides nominative for several W.C. Handy Awards (the vapours equivalent of the Grammys) and took honors for Comeback Album of the Year. Risin' with the Blues, released little Phoebe years afterward, was nominative for a Grammy in the same family.

A message posted on their MySpace reveals all: "I regret to announce that Reuben are unable to play their slot on the 2000 Trees Festival in July, but they would still urge people to go anyway - it should be a great weekend."

"They are very sorry to disappoint fans who have already bought tickets, as you can imagine Reuben hate cancelling shows. The band are all in good health but the culmination of several pressures just makes it impossible for Jamie to go ahead with it."

"The band are not planning any more gigs or releases for the foreseeable future - I should make it clear that the band members are all on amicable terms and are supportive of the need to call a halt."

"This seems like a good time to thank everyone who has helped and encouraged Reuben along the way; some of you have been there from the start, others from last week, some are within the music industry, others are simply fans - it doesn't matter which, you are all important and have given great strength to all concerned."

Brannan Lane is a multi-genre artist. With each sequential title his reputation grows as a producer and composer. He has performed in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. He's been a professional musician for 27 years. Brannan Lane draws from a spacious orbit of influences. His 1998 debut release, Caribbean Dream, illustrates some of the diverse elements of Lane's melodic pallet. Words like modern-day, tribal, ambient, new age, or nothingness, would be victimized to draw his music, beyond that, though, Brannan Lane is a diverse creative person and you before long realize this afterward hearing to his wide form of form. Ultimately, though, the best of his work falls into that of the ambient genre. 2000's Lost Caverns of Thera is one representative of this tolerant of first-class ambient work, as well as 2001's Troposphere and Sleep Cycle, which is singularly his best work. Lane travels into other directions as well, for good example 2000's Blueprint waterfall into the smooth jazz genre and his Jambient electronica series could compete with the charles Herbert Best of Astralwerks down-tempo releases. Brannan Lane makes his living as a full-time player working in Nashville, the Music City. He works on a regular basis with pop and country star Skeeter Davis, playacting weekly wireless and TV shows on the Grand Ole Opry. He as well records and performs live with a band from New Orleans/Baton Rouge, LA -- Delicious Blues Stew, world Health Organization won the national KBA laurels in 2000. You can get a line Brannan Lane Delicious Blues Stew's modish releases from the Music City Blues Society, "Bourbon Street Blues, Vol. 1," "Freehanded Al & the Heavyweights," "Luscious Blues Stew"; he as well records and performs Americana music in Nashville, TN, and Austin, TX, for the Ballistic Pintos. Beyond all of his many recorded outings, node appearances, and operation muscae volitantes; Brannan Lane has taken the time to indite euphony for the Sony Play Station, as well as doing other kinds of TV and tuner jangle work. During the number one half of 2002 Brannan Lane plans on cathartic some other half dozen ambient/space euphony recordings, including a coaction with ambient-master vidnaObmana.
